Nothing is virtual about this camp, it is a hands-on adventure where we will journal on real paper, talk to other kids in person, get our hands and feet wet in wild streams, and not look at a screen of any sort the entire time.
Forest Explorers is a foundational program for young campers, both new and returning. Designed to build confidence and connection, this camp introduces children to overnight or two-night camping experiences and the joys of living outdoors. Beginning and ending at the Spruce Knob Mountain Center, campers will form friendships through games and self-awareness activities before heading into the woods for real adventure. Together, we’ll explore valley and summit ecosystems, catch stream critters, learn survival skills, and discover forest history.
Campers will also prepare for and embark on a 1–2 night camping trip on Spruce Knob, learn to cook over a campfire, fish alongside the WV DNR at Spruce Knob Lake, explore a nearby primitive cave, and complete a service project in the national forest. Along the way, they’ll learn what it takes to set up camp, care for themselves and each other, and overcome the challenges of being away from home while making new friends. We’ll wrap up with a final celebration back at the yurts, plus a few fun surprises to close out an unforgettable Forest Explorers experience. We hope you’ll join us.
