Mountain Stewards Summer Camp
Our Mountain Stewards summer camp is a week-long expedition-style program with a stewardship focus. Join us as we climb mountains, traverse caves, and navigate through West Virginia’s beautiful and diverse forests.
2018 Program Options
This year our High School program has two distinct offerings – a canoeing expedition on the Cheat River, or a backpacking trip in the Monongahela National Forest. Time will be split between adventure, exploration, and stewardship projects focused on improving the local landscape. Stewardship projects could include trail building, riparian reclamation, and cave beautification projects. (CAMPS FULL)
Our Middle School program continues to be the perfect introduction to how we take care of the environment, ourselves, and our peers in wild places. Nights will be split between our on-site dormitories and camping in the national forest near our Spruce Knob Mountain Center. (CAMP FULL!)
Our Girls Camp provides an opportunity for girls to come together, without distraction, to celebrate their ability to thrive in backcountry settings. This year we have two distinct offerings – a canoeing expedition on the Cheat River, or a backpacking trip in the Monongahela National Forest (
CAMP FULL! more spots added on land-based program due to high demand!).
Our Wilderness Running Camp is what happens when you mix off-road running, back-country camping and summer cross country conditioning practice! An opportunity to build team- and self-awareness, and get an introduction to trail running, etiquette and stewardship.
Our Leadership Program is perfect for high school campers looking to go above and beyond our traditional offerings.
In-State Tuition: $400*
Out-of-State Tuition: $600
*As of May 1st, 2018, all scholarship funds have been awarded. We are in the process of locating additional funding, and hope to be able to provide more scholarships to West Virginia families.
We believe it is vital for everyone, regardless of means, to have access to wild places, high-quality experiential education, and meaningful stewardship opportunities. Thanks to the generosity of private donors, we are able to provide all West Virginia youth this experience at the reduced rate of $400* (a limited amount of scholarships are available to West Virginia families to help further reduce the cost). The actual cost of the camp is more than $600 for the six-night program. We require a $150 deposit at the time of registration for all participants. We encourage families that are able to make an additional donation above the minimum cost to please do so. Your tax-deductible donation will be used to provide this meaningful summer program to more youth.
We will refund participant deposits in full if we receive written notice to Melinda Brooks April 15, 2018. If a participant cancels after April 15, 2018, they will not receive a refund. We require a minimum of eight participants and reserve the right to cancel the program if we do not meet the minimum. In the event that we need to cancel a program session, we will notify families within thirty days of the start of the program and they will receive a full refund.
For more information, please contact Melinda Brooks at MBrooks@experience-learning.org or call the office at 304-567-2632.
