Experience Learning is staffed by six year-round employees and 14-20 seasonal instructors and support team members throughout the 8 month season.
Vicki Fenwick-Judy, executive director, oversees program and curriculum development, communications, and fundraising. She represents the organization on several statewide and regional education advisory boards. She has a BA and MA in psychology from Marshall University and has more than 20 years of experience in the field of environment-based and outdoor education. Vicki likes to experience the outdoors with her husband and two daughters through skiing, hiking, and biking.
Dave Martin, managing director, oversees daily operations at The Spruce Knob Mountain Center and Sweetwater Farm, accounting, and staff. He has helped the organization spin, thrive, and grow since 1993. He has a BA in American Studies from Hampshire College and over 20 years of experience in mountain adventure-based education. Dave traveled the world in pursuit of adventure, before settling down in the onsite farmhouse with his wife and kids.
Melinda Brooks, program manager, oversees independent schools, and summer camps. She has filled various roles within the organization since 2010. She has a BS in Recreation, Park, & Tourism Administration from Western Illinois University and has over 10 years of experience in the field of outdoor and adventure-based education. Melinda spends her time exploring the bounty of the local area through farm escapades and climbing outings with her husband and daughter.
Isabelle Eastham grew up on a goat and beef cattle farm in Rappahannock, Virginia. After earning a Psychology degree from the University of Mary Washington she worked several years in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis with individuals on the autism spectrum. Before moving to West Virginia, she completed a solo, northbound thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail and followed that up by completing the Long Trail in Vermont. Her favorite activities to teach are stream studies, orienteering, and sensory awareness. In her free time, you can find Isabelle painting, knitting, hiking, reading, gardening and substitute teaching in local county school systems.
Kyle Mills, caretaker, oversees the daily hospitality and maintence of The Spruce Knob Mountain Center, our equipment, and vehicles. He has a BA in History from Davis and Elkins College and has 5 years of experience in outdoor and adventure-based education. An avid outdoorsman, Kyle spends his time caving, fly fishing, rock climbing and cruising the mountain roads on his motorized bicycle named Caroline.
Katie Wolpert is Marketing Manager and Bookkeeper for Experience Learning. She earned a BS in Biology from Carnegie Mellon University in 2003 and has lived in West Virginia since 2006. Katie makes her home in nearby Barbour County, WV where she and her two children wander in the woods, run the roads and explore whenever and wherever possible. She keeps bees and grows lots of garlic, strawberries, and groundhogs (inadvertently).
Karen and Michael, caretakers and farmers, are calling Experience Learning’s newly acquired Sweetwater Farm their new home. Karen has a BA in Biology and has gained her agricultural experience from a smattering of different farms across the US. Michael works in construction and has a passion for hands-on learning. Among other things, he worked previously as an Outward Bound instructor, canoeing the Suwannee River in Florida. He can design and build just about anything. Their toddler daughter helps keep the assortment of farm animals in line and rounds up earthworms for the vegetable garden.
