ages 10 and up
July 14-20, 2019
Cost: $1500 In State & $1900 Out of State
We hope you can join us for this 7-day camp at our Sweet Water Farm campus, a 650-acre property adjacent to the George Washington National Forest in Sugar Grove, WV.
The camp is designed for intermediate to advanced riders who already possess the basic skills of caring and interacting with their horses. Instruction will focus on reading the horse, responding to needs, and developing confidence and an emotional connection between horse and rider.
This is an all-outdoor camp with no indoor or arena riding. Instruction and riding will take place in the fields, clearings, and on the trails around the farm. Being out in the elements will require campers to focus fully on the needs of and communication with their horse. The skills you will develop here can be applied in a competitive arena, but that is not the focus. We will be working on feel, timing, and balance to allow you to truly connect with your horse. You will learn how to have fun safely on horseback. You will learn to tap into the freedom and joy that comes with galloping your horse across a wild meadow.
Elements of natural horsemanship will be combined with technical trail rides though wilderness areas, mounted games (e.g., mounted archery, barrel racing), jumping, horse care and stewardship. Campers will ride every day and there will be at least one night ride. Other activities include land and stream stewardship, caving, hiking, and team building. Campers will receive individual instruction with their horse and participate in group rides and activities.
Campers and horses will be housed at the Sweet Water Farm Community Center. Participants will be responsible for bringing supplies for their horse, including all tack, grooming tools, feed, helmet, and boots. Horse trailers may be left on-site for the duration of the camp. Campers will stay in bunk-style housing with one overnight trip on horseback. All camping equipment and food will be provided for the campers.
Our staff bring more than 8 decades of experience in all aspects of horsemanship, steward and outdoor leadership. Scroll down for bios.
If you are interested, please take a moment to fill out our application form. No deposit is necessary at this time. We will contact you to discuss your experience and skills to verify that our camp will be appropriate for you before a commitment is required.
